The term ‘Psycho-Aromatherpy’ was first mentioned by two Italian doctors, Giovanni Gatti and Renato Cajola. In 1923 they published L'Azione terapeutica degli olii essenziali, or The Action of Essences on the Nervous System. This paper outlined how certain scents can influence mood and emotions, and particularly how they can affect the depressed and anxious state. They had investigated the states of anxiety and depression, and identified specific oils as sedatives, which would counteract anxiety, and stimulants, which counteract depression. They also documented, for the first time, the phenomenon whereby initial, light exposure to an ‘essence’, which resulted in stimulation, sometimes brought about a state of sedation if exposure was prolonged or repeated.

In 1973 Professor Paolo Rovesti (University of Milan) contributed to the subject of ‘psycho-aromatherapy’ by identifying essential oils for counteracting depression and anxiety, and observing that essential oil combinations were often deemed more pleasant than single oil odours. This latter observation has undoubtedly led to the practice of blending essential oils in aromatherapy,
