PRECIOUS LIKE GOLD
There was a time - many centuries ago - when precious natural aromatic essences coming from Orient
were considered to be as precious as gold . . . .
In the late Middle Ages, Venice was the European capital of the trades. The Venetian merchants used to trade goods produced in Venice with spices, incense, aromatic essences and silk from Asia and North Africa, through the “Road of Silk” and the sea route controlled by the Byzantines and Arabs. Reworked in Venice, these precious goods were then shipped to various parts of Europe, object of the yearning of men and women prepared to pay a lot of money to secure them.
Marco Polo, on his return to Venice from his trip to China, included many aromatic essences for body care, written in his travel report, Il Milione.
THE ART OF NATURAL PERFUMERY
In 1555, the book Notandissimi secreti dell’Arte Profumatoria (The very noble Secrets of perfumery Art) , was published in Venice. It contains 300 recipes, including the art of perfuming the body and the house and the art of adding scents to laundry .
Original Copy of the Notandissimi Secreti de l'Arte Profumatoria, the first western book on scents and cosmetics printed in Venice in 1555. This is the D'Annunzio Copy conserved in the Vittoriale Museum.
